The body naturally produces two types of tears. The first, lubricating tears, nourish the eye and protect its surfaces. The second type is called a reflex tear. These tears flood the eye when it is irritated or injured. They do not have a lubricating value and often work as a backup when your body is not producing enough of the lubricating tears. This is considered "dry eyes".
