Glaucoma is a disease caused by increased intraocular pressure resulting either from a distortion or malfunction of the eye's drainage structures. Glaucoma is not reversible but early detection and treatment can slow, or even halt the progression of the disease. If untreated, damage to the eye could include permanent vision loss.
With the most common form of glaucoma, open angle glaucoma, there are typically no symptoms. However, nausea, blurred vision, rainbows around lights, and red eyes can accompany certain types of glaucoma. Detection and prevention of glaucoma is possible with routine eye examinations.
